While hiking along a trail known as the Lower Loop, just outside the town limits of Crested Butte Colorado, I suddenly found myself knee deep in a field of Mule Ears. This sunflower sized bloom thrives here in the Gunnison Valley, densely populating valley floors and turning entire mountainsides yellow. I stood for a moment, mesmerized, until my attention was drawn toward the distant peak of Gothic Mountain. I watched as fast moving clouds repositioned themselves, making way for a warm summer sun to wash over the crest and melt away winter’s chilly white remnants.
